two similar stories that I particularly love...
a doctor touring some Maasai villages for an anti-malaria campaign. She would set up a screen, a slide show and explain to the audience that the main culprit was a mosquito, showing the said mosquito on the big screen. It happened that an old man interrupted her and said that she didn't have to worry and waste her time because the mosquitoes here were tiny, nothing as big as the one on the screen! Poor guy was not used to modern tools....Lovely isn't it?
the other one was about a screen as well, brought in Maasai land by a guy who wanted to show a documentary. The audience is buzzing with people, all curious and excited. The film starts normally with the Serengeti landscapes, some giraffes and gazelles...then the lions appear on the screen. Panic in the audience, screams, people rushing out...and a few spears landed in the screen!! Beware of the tough warriors...
a friend of mine, last year, was touring a Maasai area to build a new camp. Lions were roaming but keeping their distance, just being watchful as my friend and his workers. One day he took some Maasai guides with him. At one point they stopped close to lions, people got out of the car, lions stayed where they were lying. But as soon as the Maasai wrapped in their bright red blanket stepped out, the lions fled away! Beware of the tough warriors. Not sure if the lions can see in color though, maybe the silhouette with spears and machetes rang a bell. Or the scent of sour milk...
Maasai young men have to prove a few things to become warriors. Guess what, like everywhere when men are in charge, it has to be stupid, dangerous and/or glorious. Here they have to cut off a lion's tail without killing it! Even if the guy has 2 helpers with him, it's still quite a feat to achieve. The lions win a lunch as well once in a while.
