scarification is not a major part in Maasai social life. Though they love real scars resulting from accidents, mostly after an encounter with lion or a fight.

the usual wooden wedges through the ear lobes. Initially a small piece is inserted at a young age, then a bigger one a bit later and so on. So a 10 cm plate like here is common.
it is not always easy to snap these pictures. A bright sun in mid day, dark skinned people with more contrasts than white skins, and the same people under a half dried tree…not a good combination.
but this girl in the full shade poses no problem, the light gets softer and more uniform.
or here even with a few sun rays popping through the leaves.
