when I was privileged to work in some remote areas in Tanzania...

 

Here is a Masai boy who has just been circumsized, this new status while healing leads him soon to the next awaited one, warriorhood. The white mask and black cloak indicate this impure status.

And here is somehow the feminine version of the circumsized boy. Just instead of the warrior times, she'll be able to marry.
